Role Roanoke Played in Early Settlement

Though Sir Walter Raleigh failed to establish a permanent English colony on Roanoke Island, his voyages were not in vain.  The knowledge gained from the Roanoke voyages helped to create the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.  One of the main goals of the Jamestown colonist was to search for survivors of the Roanoke settlement.  Though no survivors were ever reported to be found, the colonists lead many expeditions that eventually lead the English to spread their claims to North America. The Carolina Colony was established in the 1660's and the Outer Banks were valuable for raising livestock, fishing, and some small-scale agriculture. Settlers occupied Roanoke Island again in 1670.  The island became part of England's North Carolina Colony.   Is it any wonder that North Carolina's capital city is Raleigh?  His Roanoke colony marked the beginning of North Carolina history.
