Sir Richard Grenville 

June 4th, 1542-Setember 10th, 1591

On April 9th, 1585 commanded seven ships that left from England and sailed to Roanoke Island, this was the second voyage that Sir Walter Raleigh and commissioned.  Grenville was Raleigh's cousin and served as his representative on the voyage.  On June 24th, 1585, Grenville and his fleet reached Roanoke Island.  They immediately began building a fort and other structures.  Grenville, more interested in English affairs, did not stay long on Roanoke Island.  Greville sailed for England on October 15th, 1585, leaving some men behind to continue building Fort Raleigh.  He promised to return with supplies.  Grenville did not make it back until 1586, and when he returned, he could not locate the settlers.  It was later divulged by Manteo that Wanchese had lead a group to harass the mean, and they had fled from the area.  Grenville fifteen men behind with supplies and immediately returned to England.
