![]() | Manteo & Wanchese |
Little is known about Manteo and Wanchese prior to them meeting the English explorers, Amadas and Barlowe, on Raleigh's first voyage to the New World. Manteo was a member of the ruling family of the Crotoan tribe. Wanchese was a friend and fellow tribe member. Manteo, along with Wanchese, met the English explorers in 1584 and agreed to accompany them back to England. While in England, Manteo and Wanchese were taught to speak English and how to dress and behave in civilized society. When Raleigh launched his second voyage to Roanoke Island, Manteo and Wanchese returned home. Manteo was baptized a Christian once John White and his colonists settled on Roanoke Island. He remained loyal to his English friends throughout their attempts to colonize the New World and served as their guide and interpreter. There is no record of Manteo after the disappearance of the colonists. Wanchese chose a different path when he returned home from England. He returned to his own people. During the trying times between Lane and native tribes, Wanchese was identified by Lane as a member of one of the harsh tribes. They objected to the English settling on Roanoke Island due to their extravagant food demands. According to Manteo, Wanchese was the leader of a group that harassed a group of settlers left on the island by Grenvill. He eventually drove the small group of settlers away.
